For certain periods during the year, it is not unusual for many classic car’s to lay idle, and this is when things can become gunged up somewhat, carby jets can succumb to a build up of gum from old fuel if it’s left sitting for to long.
Even high tension cables and terminals can become troublesome, and of course when the time comes to start the engine again, things can go wrong, and the fault finding process begins.
Just a short time back we had this very same problem.
Went to fire the twin cam engine up, it started ok, but was only firing on two or three cylinders… was not a happy sounding twink at all – Fouled plugs were thought to be the problem – so removed the plugs, cleaned, and adjusted all four, and re-installed, made another attempt at starting, engine fired up, but the engine was still missing – This could be frustration plus, as you could imagine.
The next suspects on the list were the high tension leads.
For reasons of which I wont go into here, the old copper high tension leads are still being used with an original, but fully reconditioned 24D Lucas distributor which is fitted with pertronix igniter, and normally works like a dream. But two of the copper leads tested faulty with the buzz tester on the multi meter…
Further investigation found that the spike from the metal plug terminal was not penetrating the copper, so after the fixes and more testing, all seemed to be fine.
It was time to re-insert the leads back into the distributor cap, and re-install the assembly back onto the distributor and engine, hook up the leads to the plugs, and give it another try… And surprise, surprise, the engine fired straight away, and after a couple of blips on the throttle, it settled down to a steady idle at about 800 RPM – Nice.
So after all of the fault finding – sorting – fixing – We decided it was time to fire the Twin Cam engine up again, and take it for a blat out on the road and around the block, and video record the short drive to test the new Go Pro Hero 10 camera and accessories. Life is good.
So here is the GoPro test video (Warts and all) of the twink cold start, and blat around the block,…
Hope you enjoy.
For the past few months, we have not produced any new video content, but now that a new camera has been acquired and commissioned, that should change once some spare time is found.
