The Lotus Elan is not just for looking at.
It’s mean’t to be driven and enjoyed in a spirited manner.
There have been three dark occasions during the past four decades, where the writer was seriously thinking of selling the S2 elan… Well, you’ll be pleased to learn, that never happened!
Throughout the writer’s many decades of Lotus elan ownership, its been an amazing experience and journey.
Hard to say what it is exactly, but its definitely the car to a large extent, the way it drives and handles, the rifle bolt gear change, the pure, raw, unadulterated driving experience that few other cars can match, plus the owners enthusiastic passion for the marque, or could it be the countless strangers who fall in love with the car at first sight, the many random conversations struck at the fuel servo, or whenever it is parked long enough to allow others to engage the owner in conversation.
The strange thing is, there is no particular age group either, there are still many young blokes who love a thoroughbred classic, and of course the elan will always attract the older blokes who lusted after a lotus elan in their misspent youth, but somehow never got around to buying one, and that is sad indeed, and last but not least, for some reason, its like a magnet to women of all ages, so you have to ask.
What is it exactly with a sixty year old sports car that stirs so many approvals and emotions with so many people?
Whatever it is, it really puts a smile on the owners face.
But a big part of it would have to be the special group of people who own and drive a Lotus… call them “The Drivers” if you will. (I wonder who coined that cool phrase) because its true, you wouldn’t own a Lotus if you absolutely didn’t totally enjoy an exhilarating drive every time you took your Lotus out for two or three hour blat on your favourite road.
If there’s one thing about owning a nice elan, its the memories and unique drives that have been enjoyed, and the best way to keep those vivid and unique drive memories alive, lets call them “Forever Memories” is to produce your own videos.
The writer has been into video creation for quite awhile now, which has resulted in a nice catalog collection of video driving memories, (Some videos are public, others not) but they are all something to look back on and enjoy in the future…. to reminisce in old age if you will.
Now don’t you laugh, remember that we are really only part-time caretakers of these awesome classic Lotus elan cars, becuase you cant take them with you, and unless a family member, or a close and car passionate relative is keen to take on the ownership and look after it at some point in time, your elan will eventually end up in a new home…. Somewhere else.
So having said all of that, now is the time to either bore you to tears, or make you smile, because perhaps you’ve been there, (Videos) and done that in your own elan… So grab a coffee, put your head phones on, turn the volume up, and enjoy some of the writers recent Lotus elan drives. Don’t watch this on your little phone screen, better to watch the videos on a lap top or desk top.
Hope you enjoyed the video. Autumn 2023 (March-April-May) has arrived in Australia, it wont be long before the hardtop is put back on and the drives will diminish during the colder winter months.
