For the past few years, we’ve been sharing information with lotus twin cam owners about how come to grips with the problem of controlling oil surge.
Oil surge at it’s worst, is potentially the most evil thing that could destroy your expensive twin cam engine in a matter of seconds.
Oil surge is caused though “G” force loads created during cornering, braking, and to a lesser extent, acceleration – the oil in the sump is forced away from the oil pickup pipe, and the standard orientation being biased to the RHS towards the front of the sump does not help in any way, so when starved of oil, the pump will suck air for a few seconds, interrupting oil flow, quickly followed by oil starvation to the main bearings and con-rod bearings, and potentially followed by that unwelcome metallic taping noise, and at it’s worst, possible ventilation of the engine block as a con-rod or two part company. (Worst case scenario)
In order to explain more about the gated and baffled sump, we have posted a couple of videos to help you understand more about the building and fabrication of The Gated And Baffled Sump For The Twin Cam Lotus Engine.
