Heel and Toe Driving Technique.
To be considered a true sports car driver, you would probably be able to brake and heel & toe while downshifting your manual gear box.
Would that be true or not?
For the majority of “old school” sports car drivers, this technique is pretty much a given.
Practicing and perfecting this driving technique will truly set you apart from the run of the mill everyday sports car driver.
Its a pretty cool party trick to impress your friends while you drive. Call it dancing on the pedals, or just plain old fancy footwork if you like, but it’s an awesome and satisfying driving technique.
Be that as it may, remember that not every pair of foot pedals in a manual car are set up correctly for heel and toe, you may have tried it and found that its difficult to do, and to be honest there’s not much that can be done unless the pedals are removed and re-arranged with some re-engineering work to make it happen.
Before you watch the video below, note that not all sports cars lend themselves to heel and toe. The Lotus elan being a fabulous drivers car and one that readily lends itself to competition is quite naturally a great heel and toe drivers car with the pedals set up correctly.
So, sit back and enjoy a video demo of the classic heel and toe technique.
For the curious videographers reading this maybe wondering how the video was recorded?
Camera – GoPro10 Black housed in Ulanzi Media cage. Rode WIGO WIFI mic system with Rode Lapel mic.
The most difficult part was mounting the camera under the elan dash to get a proper view of the pedal action in the foot well. Also, the camera needs to be mounted onto a solid rig fixture that wouldn’t shake and vibrate while driving and recording out on the road – This application called for a custom engineered adjustable mounting rig was called for which we designed and built.
The under dash camera mount, bolted securely to the DS window frame bolts.
The custom engineered camera mounting rig. Standard GoPro mounts are virtually useless in some situations, and that’s when custom camera rigs are called for.
