The writers long term ownership of the S2 elan has allowed the time and indulgence to look into ways and means of improving road handling, ride, and overall performance.
Few would disagree if I said that the elan is one of the best drivers cars ever built. There are few sports cars that give so much bang for the buck like the elan does.
The purist might not want to change a thing on their elan, and that’s fine, each to their own. But what if you are looking for a bit more all round performance, well you are lucky, because the elan does respond extremely well to performance mods, both in the engine dept, as well as chassis and suspension, especially the rear suspension.
We put together a short video to show a quick method to install and remove a CVDS conversion, and mods we have found to create a fast road rear suspension on the S2 elan.
Treat this as a close up tour of the rear suspension on the S2 elan.
This S2 elan rolls on 14″x 6″ three piece alloy wheels, which are shod with Falken Azenis tarmac rally tires, and boy, stick they do in the corners, very reassuring when pressing on a bit on a challenging road.
Other mods are:
CVDS Conversion (Of course) – Adjustable Spring platforms – Adjustable blade type ARB – Lower A Frames fitted with Toe Adjusters and camber adjustment.
The mods were done over several years, and at each development stage, we were quite prepared to reverse the mod if we felt it contributed nothing to the overall performance, but fortunately, that wasn’t the case, as each one did make a difference.
So now we have an elan that really performs on the road, it is an absolute delight to drive.
Every now and again, we go out on some interesting drives with other Brit sports cars, such as modified Healey 3000’s, MGB’s and others, but none of them can hold a candle to the S2 elan, they don’t have the handling ability, they don’t have the punch out of corners, so you can imagine the smile that the elan puts on the drivers dial.
After completing each suspension mod, the car was taken to a local performance suspension alignment workshop to check and adjust settings where required, sometimes we have pushed the boundaries a little to see what happens with a setting away from the standard spec. There has been some pleasant surprises to say the least.
