What’s The Best Kind Of Sports Car Drive?

Lets face it, if you own a lotus, you probably enjoy a damn good drive on a challenging road.
When most people think about a fun sports car drive, they probably envisage leaving about 10.00 AM for a bit of a cruise to a cafe tucked away somewhere in the country side. In this scenario, the lunch becomes the focus… the drive is an additional activity to enjoy along the way, and there’s probably nothing wrong with that.
A group drive to a chosen lunch destination can also be a lot of fun, especially when a selection of interesting roads are there for “The Drivers” to enjoy, and not a boring, Ho hum route.
The trouble with a group drive is that not all drivers are equal, and not all makes of sports cars are equal in performance, but as long as everyone arrives pretty much at the same time, all will be good.
The cover photo above was taken during the fabulous Club Lotus Vic Ski fields tour held in February 2022.
One could be mistaken for thinking that several members are keen church goer’s, when in fact the back drop for the photograph where the cars are parked just happened to be the quaint old country church at the Tolmie Recreation reserve where a fabulous and delicious high morning tea was presented by the Tolmie ladies committee in the well cared for historic community hall set in the grounds of the recreation reserve. The drive from the lower King Valley through the Whitlands to Tolmie, is a great Lotus drive… you could tell be the grins on the drivers.
The title heading to this article reads, “Solo Drive – EMR- @ 6.00AM Australian Summer Time.”, I have to say that, very early morning sports car drives in the summer are more enjoyable than you could imagine.
Few people will get out of bed at 5.00AM-6.00AM just to go for a drive.
Well, the writer does, and he is all for a little bit of fun, excitement, and adventure, and if you’ve never experienced a Summer alpine drive in the very early hours of the morning, you are missing out, and you should think about giving it a go if you can, because it delivers a whole new driving experience.
But having said that, to enjoy a proper EMR, it is really only possible right in the middle of the Aussie summer season, (Or during the summer time if you live in another country and have the Alps within an easy drive) Sumner daylight saving days are really long, and very early morning is simply the best time of the day, and there is nothing quite like the feel of crisp mountain air in an open top car like the elan.
Australian summer alpine temps usually max out between 12C to 16C, the roads are bone dry, and driving early in the morning means there’s next to zero traffic. (Insert grin).
There is something special about the magnificent aroma of the dew dampened Australian alpine forest, the picture postcard landscape images that catch your eye, the way the early morning sunlight flickers through the trees on the way up a mountain pass, the way that early light that rakes across the mountain landscape, which all combine to create a gorgeous cinematic effect, it is a unique visual and aromatic experience that sadly few people ever get to enjoy, and if you’ve not ticked the box on this one yet, go do it soon, if you possibly can, you will enjoy.
Below is a recent EMR video, a drive through historic Gold fields in NE Vic Aust.
Over the the past few years the writer has undertaken several solo 5.30AM- 6.00AM EMR drives, the solo drive means you get to set your own pace, leave exactly when you want to, you’re not waiting for anyone, you can stop where and when you want for coffee, or take in those breathtaking views, shoot those great social photos, or for any other reason, it’s just doing your own thing as you see fit… Selfish, perhaps, but when no one else wants to join you on a great drive very early on a cool summers morning, a solo drive can be great fun, and just the thing for the ultimate “Driving Fix”.
