5 Speed Isuzu gearbox installation
into classic Lotus Elan.
If you’ve been following the conversion and engineering of this project then you will be familiar with whats been going on.
But if this is your first visit to our blog, welcome. The actual installation began back in late July leading into August… our Aussie winter. Its been a long hard slog. And as with all conversions, nothing is ever straight forward, the project involved a considerable amount of engineering work.
Apart from the 5sp gearbox and the TC aluminium bell housing, everything required was designed, machined, built, fabricated, and welded in house. Even the new tail shaft or prop shaft was made in house… was it all easy? No, and there were mistakes made which had to be corrected.
The tiring and seemingly never ending work has been done, (Round of applause) and its water under the bridge now, and we finally arrived at the point where we could undertake a test drive, so we decided to video the drive and show you what a five speed gearbox is like in the elan. (Hint-very impressive on the freeway)
So here is the video, (below) it runs for five or six minutes, hope you enjoy the content. We are still writing about the various stages of the 5 spd project and will complete them in the next couple of weeks.
No doubt, there will be questions asked from various people, and if you contact us, we will try to answer them for you.
As an aside, the real beginning of this project began way back on the 18th June 2022. The day that I made a 900Km round trip to collect the box from another interstate lotus owner (Graeme W) and bring the gearbox home, and not long after that the work began.
